The Division played an important role during World War II in the invasions of North Africa, and Sicily. They participated in the liberations of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The Division was the first American unit to enter the German capital city of Berlin. Elements of the division were among the first U.S. military to engage in offensive ground combat operations in the European and Mediterranean Theaters during World War II.
